Days for Girls Service Project

We will have a service opportunity benefiting Days for Girls, an international organization that provides reusable feminine hygiene products to girls in communities all over the world.

With the tote bags and liners completed during the August 26 activity and by individuals and wards since then, we will complete the Days For Girls kits with the following donations provided on October 21:

Ziploc brand gallon-size freezer bags (no zipper slider)

Girls' (not women's) underpants, size 10-14 (colored preferred)

Washcloths (colored preferred)

Meet the Speakers

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Debra Monk
Debra was born in Manhattan, NY and raised on Long Island – that was until her father decided to move the family to Bountiful, Utah during her sophomore year. She finished high school in Utah and then attended BYU for a year before transferring to the University of Utah where she obtained a BA degree in English. She later completed a Master of Arts and Ph.D in Philosophy at the University of Maryland. She recently retired after serving 32 years in Montgomery County Public Schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and central office administrator. Her church service includes ward and stake YW and Relief Society presidencies and multiple teaching assignments. One of her favorite callings was when she and her husband were asked to support the Montgomery Chinese Branch for four years.

Debra walks three miles every day and enjoys reading and quilting. She loves to travel and has visited all 50 states and many countries. Her husband, Russell, a recently retired attorney at the U.S. Treasury Department, is her cheerleader and best friend. Together they have seven children and soon-to-be 25 grandchildren. She loves the Lord and is humbled to serve the sisters of the Washington DC Stake. Debra is a member of the Kensington Ward.

Becoming More Holy Through Covenants and Temple Worship (Terri Peterson)

Terri was born and raised in Southern California and the oldest of five. While at BYU she met and married Dave Petersen. After graduation in 1980 they moved to Maryland for what was to be a "2 years of experience". They’ve lived here ever since. She is a personal trainer, yoga and pilates instructor and teaches group exercise classes. Terri’s passion is health and wellness and loves anything outdoors: biking, hiking and skiing. She has served in the Church as a Temple worker, seminary and institute teacher, in the Young Women’s program and in Gospel Doctrine She and Dave have five children and 11 grandchildren. Sometimes she cooks when she is not reading or traveling. 



Becoming More Holy by Understanding the Atonement (Eme Martin)
 
Eme is peachy. Once you get to know her, you'll realize that's her catch phrase. While being peachy can have a positive or negative meaning, she usually falls on the positive side of things, looking for opportunities to make lemonade from lemons and generally seeking the good. She earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Brigham Young University and a master's in public health from Saint Louis University in (you guessed it), St. Louis, Missouri. Unbeknownst to her, Eme had the pleasure of serving alongside her future husband as a missionary in the Missouri St. Louis Mission. Eme married her best friend, Christopher Martin, (with firm approval from both mission presidents) in 2005 in the Washington DC Temple.

Professionally, Eme is the Regional Director for Community Health with MedStar Health. Spiritually, she serves alongside her husband in the Gaithersburg YSA teaching Institute and as the Compassionate Service Leader. They have also enjoyed the blessing of serving as temple ordinance workers for 12 years. Eme and Chris are the proud and favorite aunt and uncle of eight nieces and nephews.

Becoming More Holy Together (Tiffani Stevenson Lloyd)

As a clinical marriage and family therapist AND a wife AND a mom of three beautiful children AND a sister, daughter, friend, (etc.), Tiffani Stevenson Lloyd spends much of her time thinking about and engaged in improving and strengthening relationships. Tiffani grew up in Fruit Heights, UT - in a family of 7. She spent a summer in Romania providing care for abandoned children who were without family relationships. As a full-time missionary in Venezuela, she taught how following the Savior blesses families and communities. She studied psychology at BYU and later earned graduate degrees in couples and family therapy and family science at the University of Maryland. As a doctoral student, she conducted research regarding the importance and impact of marriage on children born to unwed parents. For several years, Tiffani taught UMD undergraduate students the course “Children in Families” - about family relationships, parenting, and child development. She currently is the owner and lead therapist of a private practice in Kensington - providing couple, family and individual therapy. Tiffani has served as a teacher at the Missionary Training Center, and for Relief Society, Sunday School, and Gospel Doctrine classes. She was a temple ordinance worker at the Washington DC temple and currently the Relief Society Second Counselor. She enjoys long distance running and enjoying delicious and exotic foods.

Becoming More Holy Through Covenants and Temple Worship (Amarlie Chavez Robles)

Amarlie was born in Nicaragua and moved to the United States in 1989. She has four sisters and two brothers. She served a mission in Anaheim and Long Beach California and has served in the Washington DC Temple for 10 years. She currently serves as the Young Women’s President in the Gaithersburg Ward and her passion is serving others in any way she can.


Becoming More Holy Together (Lucy Absi Lopez) 

Lucy was born and raised in Lima, Peru. She is the 4th of 5 siblings. She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints while still in college. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Catholic University of Peru and later worked at the Ministry of Economics of Peru. Lucy met her husband, Cesar, in college and soon after they got married they moved to the United States. Lucy received her Master degree in Latin American Studies from the University of California in Los Angeles, and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Lucy and her husband were sealed at the Los Angeles Temple, and have three children. She has been living in Potomac for the last 16 years, and enjoys tutoring Hispanic students for college. She currently serves as a teacher in Relief Society, and she is the Public Affairs representative for the Mount Pleasant Branch of the Washington DC Stake.

We desire all women to know that Heavenly Father has given each of us the capacity to become holy.

As you prepare for the conference we invite you to read and ponder Sister Carol F. McConkie's talk "The Beauty of Holiness."

We also invite you to attend Sisters at the Temple on Friday, October 20, 2017. Join us for either the 10:00am or 6:00pm endowment session. There will also be a baptism session at 10:30am. There will be refreshments following each of the endowment sessions in the temple cafeteria.

The keynote message and breakout classes will focus on holiness and the three-fold purpose of Relief Society. Classes for our Women's Conference will include:
